Syllogism of the day

If money is the root of all evil, and we should give money to poor people, wouldn't that make poor people evil?

Ed, The correct quote is "For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil." 1 Timothy 6:10 (NIV) or "For the love of money is the root of all evil." (KJV) That said, it appears that the love of money is the issue. By not giving to those who are needy we do evil by omission.

You miss the point. Is it money they need, or food, clothing and shelter?

If you give a poor man a dollar and he hides in his shoe and lets his children stay hungry, then the poor man has fallen victim to the love of money. The poor are not exempt from that moral failure. But the evil is in the man, not in the money.
If you spend your money on food, clothing and shelter for the poor, you demonstrate that you love the poor more than you love the money, and all is as it should be.

and he hides in his shoe

He must be the husband of the old woman who lived in a shoe. No wonder he's poor!
