Random Super Bowl Thoughts

Now that the Super Bowl is over, here are some random thoughts on it (basically because I don't feel like putting them in any logical order):

1. Congratulations to the Saints! If I have to be proven wrong in my prediction (yes, I wrongly picked the Colts), I enjoy having it done by sheer coaching genius. Sean Payton brought his "A" coaching game. After dominating the Colts in the 2nd quarter, yet still losing on the scoreboard, the idea to run an onside kick to start the 3rd quarter was a no-lose situation for the Saints: If they recover the kick, which they did, they get to compound their already dominant time-of-possession, while disheartening their opponents; if they didn't recover the kick, the Colts end up with a short field, which still leaves the Saints dominating time-of-possession should the Colts score.

2. On the other hand, Jim Caldwell was a major coaching disappointment. He ran the same game plan the Colts have used all season.

3. I would be willing to bet the NFL did not actually hear The Who perform live anytime recently. If they had, they would have realized Roger Daltrey's voice ain't what it used to be. That halftime show was easily the WORST I have ever heard! If the NFL is going to insist on trotting out dinosaur rock bands, then I have a suggestion for next year's Super Bowl halftime: Prop up Elvis's corpse and play his songs over the speakers. It couldn't be any more hideous than what they inflicted on us this year.

4. Too bad Carrie Underwood butchered "The Star Spangled Banner". But I always thought Bo Bice should have won "American Idol" that year.

5. The best commercial was easily Punxsutawney Polamalu: "He saw his shadow! Six more weeks of football!" If that thought doesn't warm a football fan's heart, nothing will.

You're so right about the halftime show. Janet Jackson gave the last worthwhile one, her "wardrobe malfunction" notwithstanding.

I agree with your blog on so many accounts, other than the fact that I was rooting for the Saints from the beginning. The Saints came prepared and utterly fearless! The Who put me in snoozeville. Punx Paulumalo was only overshadowed by Denny's screaming chickens. Carrie did butcher the SSB. Yes, Bo Bice should have won.

Call me nostalgic and perhaps overly sentimental, but I thought Daltrey and Townshend were fine.

Did we see "The Who" of the '60's, '70's, '80's or even '90's... no.

What did you expect? (Riffing off your Elvis shot, perhaps they should have dug up Moon and Entwistle!)

As to the Game...

Sean Payton is THE Man!

Commercials...

That "Green Police" ad for Audi freaked me out. Seriously! I'm still trying to figure out whether it was clever satire and a political elbow to the wacko wing of the environmental movement or whether...

(*THROWING MY HANDS UP IN THE AIR*)

Or... I don't know...

(*SHRUG*)

I liked the Bud ad with the "people bridge" constructed to get the beer truck across.

As for "BigDaddy"...

(*SHAKING MY HEAD*) (*SIGHING*)

One thing I noted about the game - the actual quarters of play went by quickly; at least they seemed to for me.

It was a good game; I really enjoyed it.

Bill,
You're nostalgic and overly sentimental. ;)

Seriously, The Who played all of their songs which I have always enjoyed, and even I had to grind my teeth as I heard Daltrey butcher them. Simon Cowell would have called it "bad karaoke".

My previous prediction could've been quite accurate if not for unfortunate circumstances. Peyton was moving the ball and moving it well in the fourth quarter when he made his only (and one of the few) mistakes in the game, which was too much for the Colts to overcome. The Saints overcame some early mistakes (they were fortunate to come back and get that field goal at the end of the half after squandering a goal line opportunity), and that onside kick was guts and genius, if a bit reckless. Sean Payton could've easily been castigated for that one if it failed and the Saints lost. But the pick-six sealed the game, that moment was utter beauty when the Saints and their fans realized that they were going to win it after all.

So, Dave...

What you're saying is...

(*LOL*)

...if you hadn't been wrong... you would have been right.

Actually, a better way to put it would be that the game was pretty much following the script that I imagined, particularly in the second half, right up until the interception.

And I much preferred a peek of Janet Jackson's flesh over Pete Townshend's. Yuck.
