"Much of the social history of the Western world over the past three decades has involved replacing what worked with what sounded good. In area after area - crime, education, housing, race relations - the situation has gotten worse after the bright new theories were put into operation. The amazing thing is that this history of failure and disaster has neither discouraged the social engineers nor discredited them." - Thomas Sowell, from Is Reality Optional?
Even today, it is amazing how liberalism/socialism continues to thrive.

Perhaps it survives because at heart we are all some sort of idealist. We all want just a little better for our kids than there was for us. And I truly believe that's a good thing. Without looking to improve things, we'd stay stagnant, and that would be like moving backwards...Still, if it aint broke...now reconcile those two and you can be our next president ;)
Fisch,
I agree. We all strive for Utopia, but we would all be bored if we ever got there. For mankind, the true Utopia is the greater conquest for understanding of the universe, without interference from the lesser struggle for survival.
Government will never create a Utopia. The best thing government can do is protect the path for those people who will get us there.
I am not sure I would want to be the next president. Although, if elected, I will serve.
