Car-pocalypse Now

News reports tell us the government's "cash for clunkers" program, also known as the Car Allowance Rebate System (CARS), has already burned through the $1 billion allocated for it.

(On a side note, this means the CARS program is officially over. From the CARS website: "Program runs through Nov 1, 2009 or when the funds are exhausted, whichever comes first.")

What a surprise that people would take $3,500 or $4,500 if you offer it to them. All they have to do is make the huge sacrifice of going out and buying a new car. Oh the horrors of "new car smell"! Of course, the biggest sacrifice is the frequent visits to the mechanic and the gas station.

Sarcasm aside, the American people naturally did what the program intended. But as we have seen with too many recent government attempts to plan our economy, you CANNOT plan an economy.

The money quote on this subject comes from car salesman Rob Bojaryn (in an article on wcbstv.com):
"If they can't administer a program like this, I'd be a little concerned about my health insurance."
Good question indeed.

UPDATE: Grammar.

According to transportation department data, Toyota accounted for three of the top 10 models purchased under the cash-for-clunkers scheme.

Honda and Ford had two each, and GM and Chrysler one each.

==========

OK. So...

Toyota gets 30% of the benefit...

Honda gets 20%...

Hmm... that's 50% for JAPAN.

(Right..??? I'm not a math wiz... but I think that's right...)

Ford gets 20%...

GM gets 10%...

Chrysler gets 10%...

(Hmm... again with the math thing... 50+20+10+10=90... correct?)

So... assuming a portion of the remaining (unaccounted for) sales went to companies such as... er... Mercedes... BMW... Volkswagen... and so on and so forth... OVER 50% of OUR taxpayer provided (well... the debt's on us, anyway) "stimulus" spending went to... er... FOREIGN AUTOMOBILE MANUFACTURERS...???

Now I realize some of your are proud foreign car owners. And, yes, I realize some "American" cars are manufactured in Canada, Mexico, and elsewhere (at least certain parts/components) just as certain "foreign" cars are manufactured here... in places like Tennessee.

Still... however you slice it... our federal government - those dumb ba$tards in Washington - elected to tax me (and you) and then use a certain portion of those taxes (or of the IOU receipts they've put on "our" accounts) in order to stimulate Japan, Germany, and God knows who else.

UNFRIGG'NBELIEVABLE! That's what I say.

If the Japanese want to say thanks... me, myself, and I humbly request that come Dec. 7th, 2009... they bomb Washington, DC.

(Just a thought... just a thought...) (*GRITTING MY TEETH*)
